Child diversity and mastery

Awareness.
Diversity.
Comprehension.

Mastery.

Awareness

To develop an individual child’s understanding of the structure of English. The phonetic patterns, letter-to-sound application, spelling rules, and structure of sentences. The recognition and application of varied text structures including narrative, informative, informative-narrative, and persuasive. Skilled reading ability and an appreciation for fine literature to enhance and expand their imagination and perception of the world.

Diversity

The understanding, integration, and ability to recall newly learned skills promote the confidence to approach a diverse range of literacy tasks with ease. Thoughts must be organised sequentially, with a structured focus to create meaning for the subject. This requires the clever and confident use of grammatical constructs relevant to the specific task.

Comprehension

A skill directly related to fluent reading, active listening, and metacognition. Do I comprehend correctly what I have just read? Have I engaged the mental actions of monitoring my understanding of the text whilst making connections with prior knowledge and predicting the authors purpose and type of writing? Then, can I reformat the information categorising the essential versus additional information? Do I understand and am able to mentally summarise and identify the stated main idea and implied meaning of the text? This is a complex and layered skill to develop.

Application

As this is a child-centred approach, it requires consistent monitoring and clever analysis of the individual’s level of understanding. Success and application require the correct recall of newly developed skills, and methods. A consistent monitoring and clever analysis of the individual’s level of understanding and abilities is key. Sequential instruction and application procedures from the simple to the complex are cumulative using multi-sensory methods to facilitate each individual's learning style. This creates an engaging and creative development of all channels of the brain, as the stronger channels support the weaker.

Mastery

Self-mastery is a journey of awareness, understanding, and improvement, whilst also being slightly challenged to achieve a new personal standard with ease. High expectations through considered challenges develop and nurture an individual child’s abilities and personal capabilities. The considered development of reading, speaking, listening, comprehending, writing, and imaginative skills reinforce self-confidence and promote learning to confidently thrive.
